Babasonicos, Rock en Español

This is not a new band, they don’t have a new album, the above video it’s not new, but if you haven’t done so, you need to discover this band, please meet Babasonicos! One of the remaining greatest bands of Rock en Español, with a career spanning over two decades, they have done the opening acts to INXS, Soul Asylum and Depeche Mode, Babasonicos also composed the soundtrack for Vera Fogwill’s movie Las Mantenidas Sin Sueños (Kept and Dreamless), which was released in 2007, they are the protagonists of a documentary movie about Jessico, an album that marked their careers and the history of the Argentinian record industry, once one of the strongest and most important exporters of music in Latin America, which with the political and economic crisis was about to vanish completely “Una Historia de Rock En Tiempos Convulsos” transports us to Argentina back in 2001 thru the eyes and music of Babasonicos and their ordeal to launch the album in spite of the chaos going on in the streets, after this events Jessico became a landmark, if this is not enough to appreciate their contribution to Rock en Español what truly catches my eye (literally) is their question of aesthetic standards, this questioning makes their videos unique, at the beginning directing the videos themselves and now enlisting the help of professionals they have manage to carve an style of their own; deliciously kitsch!

I invite you to plunge into the universe of Babasonicos

Bon voyage with Argentinian titans of Rock en Español!

Agua Negra

Meet the Boys from Agua Negra ( El Cotola & Paranoized ) who launched their first album “Agua Negra” this past October, In this album Hip hop meets the traditional melancholic melodies of boleros and cumbia with Montreal being the meeting place, what’s not to like? http://www.facebook.com/officialaguanegra

Here is their first single featuring BOOGAT entitled «Ya Lo Vi».

Repeat after me, los Amigos invisibles

What do you get if you mix a hint of disco a dash of funk a touch of acid rock a few drops of Philadelphia sounds or sweet Philly as some would like to call it and of course like the cherry on top a good shot of Latin rhythms? Well you get Los Amigos invicibles!

In the early nineties six guys; Julio Briceño (a.k.a. “Chulius”, vocals, percussion), José Luis Pardo (a.k.a. “Cheo” or “DJ Afro”, guitar, songwriting), Armando Figueredo (a.k.a. “Odnam”, keyboards), Mauricio Arcas (a.k.a. “Maurimix”, congas, percussion), José Rafael Torres (a.k.a. “Catire”, bass), and Juan Manuel Roura (a.k.a. “Mamel”, drums, percussion) decided to get together to create a new sound, a sound missing from the Venezuelan musical landscape ( the band was formed in Caracas, Venezuela) well their plan worked, they were very successful in their crusade to offer “Gozadera” party music, fun music, an alternative the traditional Latin rhythms like salsa and merengue, and a contrast to Punk sounds ( pretty popular in Venezuela in the 90’s).

Now even though the band members are scattered around Mexico, Miami and New York, a few Grammys later, sold out shows throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the band is back at it again, with a new album “Repeat after me” taking us back in time with a Latin floured Afro-jazz tropical disco, Yeap, your hips will not resist their catchy beats, yes the guys never stop touring and they are back electrifying audiences with their explosive live shows.

Los Amigos invisibles perform tonight at at 8 p.m. L’Astral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan)

Michael Bublé, Moondance

If you are as lunatic as I am you probably know tonight is the full Moon, although it’s effects on humans has not been proven, to me it’s just a mysterious, mystical, romantic event! And since we are on the subject of romance lets enjoy Moondance by Michael Bublé, I wish you all a fantabulous night to make romance…

Maria xx

“The term lunar effect refers to the unfounded belief that there is correlation between specific stages of the Earth’s lunar cycle and deviant behavior in human beings that cannot simply be explained by variation in light levels. There is no scientific reason to expect this to be the case, and in spite of numerous studies, no significant lunar effect on human behaviour has been established. Scholars debunking the effect sometimes refer to it as the Transylvanian hypothesis or the Transylvanian effect to emphasise its fanciful nature.” (Excerpt from Wikipedia).

Well, it’s a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I’m trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Can I just have one a’ more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well I wanna make love to you tonight
I can’t wait till the morning has come
And I know now the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure you’re never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And everytime I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can’t hide

Can I just have one a’ more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well, it’s a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I’m trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

One more moondance with you in the moonlight
Can’t I just have one more dance with you my love

Maria xx

Aren’t you somethin’ to admire?
Cause your shine is somethin’ like a mirror
And I can’t help but notice
You reflect in this heart of mine
If you ever feel alone and
The glare makes me hard to find
Just know that I’m always
Parallel on the other side

Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
I can tell you there’s no place we couldn’t go
Just put your hand on the glass
I’m here tryin’ to pull you through
You just gotta be strong

I don’t wanna lose you now
I’m lookin’ right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I’ll tell you, baby, it was easy
Comin’ back here to you once I figured it out
You were right here all along

It’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn’t get any bigger
With anyone else beside me
And now it’s clear as this promise
That we’re making
Two reflections into one
Cause it’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

Aren’t you somethin’, an original
Cause it doesn’t seem merely assembled
And I can’t help but stare, cause
I see truth somewhere in your eyes
I can’t ever change without you
You reflect me, I love that about you
And if I could, I
Would look at us all the time

Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
I can tell you there’s no place we couldn’t go
Just put your hand on the glass
I’m here tryin’ to pull you through
You just gotta be strong

I don’t wanna lose you now
I’m lookin’ right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I’ll tell you, baby, it was easy
Comin’ back here to you once I figured it out
You were right here all along

It’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn’t get any bigger
With anyone else beside me
And now it’s clear as this promise
That we’re making
Two reflections into one
Cause it’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

Yesterday is history
Tomorrow’s a mystery
I can see you lookin’ back at me
Keep your eyes on me
Baby, keep your eyes on me

I don’t wanna lose you now
I’m lookin’ right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I’ll tell you, baby, it was easy
Comin’ back here to you once I figured it out
You were right here all along

It’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn’t get any bigger
With anyone else beside me
And now it’s clear as this promise
That we’re making
Two reflections into one
Cause it’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

You are, you are the love of my life [x10]

Baby, you’re the inspiration for this precious song
And I just wanna see your face light up since you put me on
So now I say goodbye to the old me, it’s already gone
And I can’t wait wait wait wait wait to get you home
Just to let you know, you are

You are, you are the love of my life [x8]

Girl you’re my reflection, all I see is you
My reflection, in everything I do
You’re my reflection and all I see is you
My reflection, in everything I do

You are, you are the love of my life [x16]

Maria by Louis Mhlanga

I decided to share with you today a treat for me, yes the song is called Maria and I love it! (I secretly pretend that he’s singing it to me) Please meet Louis Mhlanga, a Zimbabwean self taught guitarist who now calls South Africa home, this song was recorded live in his own backyard, the effortless simplicity of his performance caught my attention, it has a peaceful calming effect on me, I hope it does the same for you! Louis is a smile to light up the world, this is a perfect song to start the week, I could almost see the sun rising to the sound of his voice and the gentleness of his guitar, have a great Day everybody!

Concha Buika “The Flamenco Queen”

Be ready to be charmed, Buika incarnates passion, she’s got that raw emotion in her voice that grabs your deepest feelings, believe me it will take one listen and you won’t know what possessed you, you might ask where does it come from? this intensity, this truthfulness that confronts you with your own deepest melancholic, passionate feelings, it might come from her experiences growing up in Spain, to be precise, born on the island of Mallorca to political refugees from the African nation of Equatorial Guinea, being the only African in her neighborhood and finding refuge with gypsy families probably shaped up her understanding of Flamenco, as she says: “It’s not just about the music, it’s a way of life. It’s about not running away from yourself. Some people sing about what they would like to happen or how they would like to be, but in the copla and cante, we confront who we are, with all our fears and all our defects”
If that doesn’t grab your attention you should probably check out her latest album “En mi piel” a compilation from her four previous albums in which we’ll find collaborations with Armando Manzanero amongst others and of course the magnificent songs performed in Almodovar’s 2011 film La Piel Que Habito (“por el Amor de Amar” and “Se Me Hizo Fácil”) at 17.99$ with a bottle of Aged Venezuelan Rum you got yourself a memorable soirée!
